The Benefits of a Candidate Job Application Tracker

The Benefits of a Candidate Job Application Tracker

The job search is a daunting endeavor. Nobody relishes this step of professional development. Whether you’ve lost your job, or you’re stuck in a role that no longer aligns with your goals, you’re at that point where your current career path isn’t going to get you to where you want to go. The job search starts when you’re ready to do something about it.

It’s not for the faint of heart, even when it’s unavoidable. On average, it takes 21 to 80 job applications to get one job offer. It’s no time to stop and enjoy the scenery- once you start, you want to move through the job search as quickly as possible. The first step is to put together a strategic plan. This can minimize the time it takes to accept a solid job offer by identifying the steps you need to take to get there. A job application tracker is a tool that enables you to follow through with your plan. Using this tool has many benefits.

1. Organization. When you use a job application tracker, all information related to your job search is in the same place. It’s easy to find who, what, where, when, and how you applied to each job. It also keeps things streamlined, so you don’t apply to the same role twice- especially when the same job might post on different platforms.

2. Focus. With a job application tracker, you know where you’re at with each application, what the next step is, and when you’ll take this step. All your reminders are in the same place.

3. Accountability. It’s easier to follow through on an action step when you’re keeping track of what you’ve done, and when you’ve done it.

The process of finding a new job can be overwhelming. Accountability is meant to be encouraging- rather than dwelling on the things that aren’t happening, it calls attention to the steps you are taking. You’ve applied to ten jobs this week. You’ve emailed two contacts. The little steps you take each day will add up to the change you want to see.

4. Motivation. Nothing is less motivating than putting a plan in motion and not getting the results you hoped to see. This reality fuels the diet and exercise industry. When you use a job application tracker, you have the data you need to modify your plan for better results.

5. Networking. You know what they say: It’s not about who you know, it’s about who you’re about to know. The job search is the perfect opportunity to expand your network. Right now, 80% of jobs are filled through networking. It’s even estimated that around 70% of all jobs are never even posted publicly on a job site. A job application tracker calls attention to the point of reference for each job. A hiring manager or personal referral may know of other job opportunities, or roles that are better fits for your skillset and career goals.

A good job application tracker will include the following information:

1. The company name. Link the website when possible.

2. Job application. Where did you find this job? How did you apply- through the employer’s website or job site? Did you submit your resume directly to someone’s email?

3. Location. Is this a hybrid or remote role? This will allow you to target your questions during an interview. If it’s hybrid, how many days a week do you need to be in the office? If it’s onsite, does the company offer commuter benefits?

4. Company contact information. This is also good to know, for networking purposes.

5. Apply date. If the hiring manager reaches out after a long delay, this can help you understand how long it takes for this company to make decisions; it’s a reflection of their culture. Also, it’s appropriate to follow up if you haven’t heard back after a week or two.

6. Status of the application. Have you applied? Do you need to adjust your resume before applying? Are you in the interview or reference check stage? Keep moving forward!
